The city of Carlisle and its surrounding countryside offer an unparalleled choice of ways to get active! Whether it's walking, cycling or other outdoor or indoor pursuits, we can spoil you for choice.

  • Walking Experience the delights of the new Hadrian's Wall National Trail (see page 8) the 70 mile Cumbria Way which weaves through the Lake District to Ulverston or the Cumbria Coastal Way stretching 150 miles and linking Silverdale on the Lancashire Border to Gretna in Scotland.   • Cycling Carlisle is the hub where the national Inverness to Dover route crosses the Reivers Cycle Way from Tynemouth to Whitehaven, the Cumbria Cycle Way and the Whitehaven to Sunderland C2C route over the North Pennines.The Eden Valley Circular Cycle Route is one of the most enjoyable ways to explore this beautiful region.   • Fishing The Rivers Eden, Esk and their tributaries are well known for their Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout.
  • Pony Trekking Kershope Forest is home to the Bailey Mill Riding Centre plus north of the city centre is the Cargo Riding Centre providing BHS approved tuition.
  • Golf top class golf courses are dotted in and around Carlisle. Other excellent courses include Penrith, Silloth and Powfoot in Scotland.
  • Watersports Talkin Tarn Country Park offers canoeing and rowing boat hire as well as wind surfing and other sailing facilities.
  • Bird watching In addition to the spectacular Solway Estuary, there are RSPB reserves at Campfield Marsh and Haweswater in the Lake District. Geltsdale offers a great centre along its wooded river valley and Caerlaverock over the nearby Scottish border has its own Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve.
  • Horseracing Carlisle Racecourse is located to the south of the city and has both flat and National Hunt racing for an enjoyable and hopefully profitable day out.
  • Swimming The Pools in Carlisle incorporates 3 heated swimming pools, a waterslide, a gym and a magnificent Victorian Health suite.
