Shopping

  • Carlisle offers one of the most compact, level and visitor friendly city centres in the country. From boutique chic to familiar high-street havens, you will find it all in the award winning The Lanes shopping centre and the pedestrianised main high street.
  • Visit the award-winning Market Hall, which is now one of the few remaining covered Victorian Markets in the country.
  • A regular city centre Farmers' Market has a huge variety of food from around the region
  • Carlisle Shopmobility enables those with walking difficulties to explore the shops with ease, providing free wheelchairs and powered scooters. Please contact Carlisle City Council's Shopmobility Co-ordinator on 01228 625950.

Continental Market

  • The city takes on a European theme when dozens of French, German and Italian stallholders arrive for one of the regular Continental Markets bringing in specialist produce and gifts from near and far.   The Christmas event is from December 2nd to 6th in Carlisle City Centre, 9am to 6pm Daily (Late night shopping on Thursday).

Late Night Thursdays

  • Many City Centre stores remain open until 7pm each Thursday.
  • Free car parking in all Carlisle City Council car parks after 5pm each Thursday.

The Christmas City

  • For a truly magical experience - from the 15th of November 2009 Carlisle City Centre will once again be transformed into a magical winter wonderland, as Carlisle becomes 'The Christmas City.' Carlisle has some of the most spectacular Christmas Lights you will EVER see, and well as a full programme of events including Carlisle's Christmas Market in the City Centre.
