Bars
The city of Carlisle has had a long and interesting association with pubs and the consumption of alcohol. In 1916, in order to regulate the drinking habits of munitions workers at Longtown and Gretna, the government took over the brewing, distribution and sale of alcohol in Carlisle. The Government-run State Management Scheme retained control of Carlisle Brewery and several public houses in the city right up to 1973.
Today, however, Carlisle can boast a wide range of public houses, from charming country pubs to contemporary urban bars. Everything from real ale to fine wines and sophisticated cocktails are on offer. On warm summer days you can relax in one of the many outdoor beer gardens with a refreshing drink, or warm up next to a roaring log fire in the winter.
From national pub chains to small independently-run breweries, Carlisle has a public house to suit your thirst and where you can be sure of a warm welcome and a good time.
